Overview
Born in 1984, Julia Scalbert lives and works in Marseille. She graduated from the Nîmes School of Fine Arts in 2009 and regularly exhibits her work in France and abroad: Marseille, Lyon, Annonay, Meymac, Brest, and Seoul. In 2015, she won the Novembre Painting Prize in Vitry.
Her work is shaped by an alternation between painting and ceramics, whose dialogue defines her repertoire of forms and her color palette, situated in the space between abstraction and figuration. Her recent work, inspired by recurring motifs in art history—bathers, acrobats, and dancers—explores the body through more intimate and sensual representations.
My view

What moves me about Julia is a tension, one she never seeks to resolve, between the body and abstraction. Her sensual forms draw inspiration from the bathers and dancers of art history without ever directly referencing them; she makes them her own. Each canvas seems to emerge from the one before it, yet within a style that remains consistently recognizable. It is a form of painting that takes its time and makes that time visible.
