Overview
Safae Moatassime works with colored pencils and India ink on paper. Two registers coexist in her work: large formats inhabited by a broad, vibrant gesture, where color unfolds in layers of tightly packed lines, and a series of small formats in India ink constructed point by point, in stippling. In both cases, the same logic: a patient accumulation that produces something alive. The artwork holds as much in the repeated gesture as in the subject.
The titles are statements: Plaidoyer pour les chagrins, La Grande Impermanente, My Grandmother was a masterpiece. They say something about what Safae Moatassime considers worthy of attention: inner states, female figures, and emotional memory. Drawing is the language she chooses to speak about them.
My view
I chose her in May 2026.
Gentle tools, the pencil, the ink, for a stubborn line, repeated hundreds of times, that says I am here. Safae draws things that do not fade away. The same friend who introduced me to HQ told me about Safae. She writes me long messages about what she's drawing, and about what happens while she's drawing.
